Every event throughout human history holds a story. The U-Boat Project Wales 1914–18 aimed to uncover the untold stories of Wales and the First World War at sea. Between 1914 and 1918, at least five thousand ships were sunk by German submarines – or U-boats – in an attempt to starve Britain into submission. Almost two hundred ships were sunk off the Welsh coast. Over the course of two years, the project has identified and imaged seventeen First World War wrecks lying on the seabed around the Welsh coast. Alongside this, we have discovered some amazing stories lost in the mists of time. What struck us most is that the majority of these stories are not about traditional ‘war heroes’ but about ordinary people and their communities. In this publication, we have collected some of our favourite stories, but there are many, many more. The Welsh contribution to the war effort was significant and had a lasting impact on Welsh communities.
