This book illustrates the work of the Welsh Asian Heritage Project which was launched in October 2023 with the aim of highlighting the remarkable contributions of Asian migrant communities to Welsh life in religious, cultural, social, and economic terms. The project recorded personal migration stories, particularly of Ugandan Asians who were expelled by Idi Amin in 1972, including those who were accommodated in the reception camp at Tonfanau, Merioneth, north Wales. The project charted how Welsh Asian activities have shaped diversity in the Welsh landscape and has documented important places of cultural, religious and historical significance in Wales. We gift you this book that includes pen portraits of the people who generously contributed their stories of forced migration.
This book also offers insights on some important places of worship. The recorded interviews are available on People’s Collection Wales and will serve as a record for present and future generations. The record of the sixty-three documented places of religious and social significance will be available on Coflein, the Royal Commission’s online database of sites of historic interest. The Welsh Asian Heritage Project was funded by the Welsh Government’s Anti-racist Wales Action Plan.
